Description by Studio

Stanley Houghton was in advance of his time with his picture of morals and manners in a Lancashire town in the early years of the century. Fanny Hawthorn proved to be one of the first rebel stage heroines to strike a blow for Women's Lib. This classic comedy was a smash-hit first in Manchester and then in London when it was first seen in 1912. It was also controversial, and brought on itself a torrent of abuse and critiscm from playgoers and churchgoers who thought Fanny's behaviour scandalouse and disgusting. But the acclaim of the main drama critics established Houghton's reputation as one of the liveliest and most entertaining writers of the new age that was still dawning for late Victorian England.
