A devastating tsunami originating from the depths of the Marianas Trench destroys the Hawaiian Islands, continuing towards the west coast and becoming more powerful as it approaches Los Angeles. As scientists try to stop the impending destruction and the military begins planning for the worst, a brash young grad student comes up with a dangerous solution: start the mother of all earthquakes to counter the rushing torrent and raise the continental shelf off the coast of the United States.
