Begotten is a 1989 American experimental horror film written and directed by E. Elias Merhige. It stars Brian Salsberg, Donna Dempsey, Stephen Charles Barry, and members of Merhige's theatre company Theatreofmateria. The film's unconventional narrative follows the suicide of an unnamed godlike figure and the resulting births of Mother Earth, whose Son of Earth journeys through a barren landscape. The film does not contain dialogue, and is instead based on the early silent film visual style.
