By 1939, the struggling Grand National attempted to survive on a rather restricted diet of Tex Ritter Westerns and the novelty of the "singing cowgirl" oaters. The aptly titled The Singing Cowgirl is probably the best of the three Dorothy Page Westerns and includes a touching scene where Dorothy, Dave O'Brien, and little Dix Davis -- who also played Si Crowell in Our Town (1940) -- bury the latter's parents to the strains of the sentimental "Prairie Boy" by Al Sherman, Walter Kent, and Milton Drake. Page also warbled Sherman, Kent and Drake's "I Gotta Sing" and "Let's Round Up Our Dreams" -- the latter twice. An idea whose time never came, the singing cowgirl was doomed to fail. The audience for this sort of thing, children, barely tolerated the standard B-Western leading lady, much less a singing girl star who needed the aid of a male partner for the inevitable fisticuffs. But seen with modern eyes, Page certainly didn't embarrass herself and her three Westerns are no worse than the average B-Western of 1939.
