Synopsis by Mark Deming

A splintered family looks pack on their unconventional past in this drama from Austrian filmmaker Marie Kreutzer. In the 1970s and 80s, Hans (Johannes Krisc) was the leader of a hippie-style commune based out of a rambling, run-down house in the country, where he raised several children alongside a large band of friends and compatriots. When Hans dies, only one of his kids is by his side, Niki (Philipp Hochmair), a doctor still searching for the parental approval he didn't get when he was young. When word is passed that Hans is dead, his other children arrive at the old house to pay their respects -- troubled and neurologically damaged Mizzi (Emily Cox), high-minded Vito (Andreas Kiendl), who brings along his girlfriend (Pia Hierzegger), and bitter Kyra (Andrea Wenzl), who arrives with her boyfriend Miguel (Sami Loris) in tow. As the family comes together for the first time in years, they look back on the old days with Anna (Marion Mitterhammer), Hans' wife, and the mother of all the kids but Kyra. While many of their memories are sunny, some are not, and as the children reflect on how their upbringing shaped them, Kyra confronts the events that drove her away from the family and kept her from seeing her father for more than two decades. Die Vaterlosen (aka The Fatherless) received its world premiere at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.
