Review by Perry Seibert

An off-putting combination of the underwater setting of Finding Nemo with the relentless pop-culture reference-a-second pacing of the Shrek films, Shark Tale is a loud and empty film that lacks charm, humor, or respect for its audience. The nonstop barrage of activity begins right from the first frame and never lets up long enough to develop any emotional impact at all. The gangster storyline is far too complicated for a child to understand the main character's motivations. With the exception of Renée Zellweger, who brings some thought to her character, and Jack Black, who makes his voice unrecognizable, the cast is uniformly lazy. The stunt casting never goes beyond the stunt, so Will Smith, Robert De Niro, and Martin Scorsese are stuck playing little more than variations on their personas, and the audience is supposed to think it's funny that they are even in an animated film. Shark Tale is the very worst thing any movie can be, entirely forgettable.
