Undercover cop Terry Martin has spent six months getting close to kingpin Simon Bacig, gathering evidence that will bring the brutal mobster to his knees. But when Bacig invites Terry and his wife to his birthday party, there's a problem: Terry doesn't actually have a wife. Terry is paired with policewoman Susan Reese, a lovely cop with ambition and courage, who pursues an affair with Bacig to help the case.
