The Mask is a 1994 American superhero comedy film directed by Chuck Russell, from a screenplay by Mike Werb and a story by Michael Fallon and Mark Verheiden. It is the first film in the Mask franchise, based on the comic book series of the same name by Mike Richardson, published by Dark Horse Comics. Starring Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz, Peter Riegert, Peter Greene, Amy Yasbeck, and Richard Jeni, the film follows Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey), a down-on-his-luck bank employee who finds a magical wooden mask that transforms him into a green-faced and zoot-suited trickster known as The Mask, who can alter himself and his surroundings at will. The Mask marked Diaz's film debut, who was a model with no previous acting experience prior to being cast. Filming began in Los Angeles on August 30, 1993, and concluded in October 1993.
