Daniel's son Bobber requires expensive orthopedic surgery and months of extensive physical therapy to recover from a car accident. Rodney Freeman, the young black man Daniel adopted, has become a best-selling author and offers to fly Daniel and Bobber to San Francisco and to pay for the treatment. Once in San Francisco, Daniel meets and develops feelings for Briony, a physical rehabilitation specialist who is assisting in Bobber's recovery. As the therapy slowly progresses, Bobber extends to Briony an invitation to fly back with him to Canaan to spend Christmas with the Burtons and continue his treatment there. Briony has expertise for a dealing with a bustling family, but Sarah, Daniel's daughter, acts cold toward Briony, as Sarah doesn't like the idea of her late mother being replaced. This tense Christmas quarrel drives Daniel and Briony apart. After some soul searching though, Daniel realizes that he should open himself to true love with Briony once again.
