In this episode of the History Channel series Wrath of God, which explores different natural disasters through the ages, there is a look at the so-called "Ring of Fire" that encompasses an area in the Pacific Ocean around Chile. This "ring" is appropriately named since it is a location of considerable geologic activity which stretches along the South American coast for over 2,600 miles. In 1960, the most disastrous earthquake ever documented, hitting 9.5 on the Richter scale, hit Chile. Over 7,000 people were killed and thousands injured. Rescue efforts took months and clean-up efforts took years. The effects of the earthquake were even felt in other parts of the world, where Hawaii and Japan both received such disastrous tsunamis that over 160 people perished in those areas. There is extensive footage shown of much of the damage in Chile, including some of the damage of subsequent volcanoes and tidal waves that plagued Chile as a result of the earthquake's tremors.
