A typical assembly line Universal Western, The Phantom Bullet stars Hoot Gibson as Click Farlane, a Colorado cowboy returning to the old homestead when his father (John T. Prince is murdered by a mysterious gang of rustlers. To learn all he can about the murderer, Click assumes the disguise of a complete nincompoop, a ruse that succeeds only after a couple of close calls. Along the way, our hero falls in love with blonde houseguest Jane Terrill (Eileen Percy). The Phantom Bullet was based on Click of the Triangle T, a short story by Oscar J. Friend.
