aka Following the Flag to France By the time this eight-reel picture was released by the U.S. Committee on Public Information, World War I had been going on for a long time -- in fact, the war would end six months after it came out. So most of what was in this film was already pretty well covered in the weekly newsreels of the day, but the era's patriotism ran so high that it still managed to draw. It was divided into two parts, the first opening with an address to Congress by President Wilson and showing flashes of Germany's invasion of Belgium, the sinking of the Lusitania, the Liberty Loan efforts and America gathering and organizing its troops to head for Europe. The second half shows the camps in France, front-line trenches and aviators, General Pershing and President Poincare at the front, and the Kaiser watching his troops goose-stepping in Berlin. There was little propaganda to be had here -- it was purely documentation of the war and the involvement of the U.S.
