Synopsis by Hal Erickson
This 50-minute documentary recounts the 1933-35 Arctic expeditions of Admiral Richard E. Byrd. The narration, provided by Byrd himself, is adapted from his own books Discovery and Alone. The film's highlight consists of "actuality" footage culled from Byrd's 5-month stay 150 miles away from his base at Little America. Various penguins, huskies and frolicking killer whales provide "comedy relief." One of the earliest efforts from producer Joseph E. Levine, Discovery was timed for release not long after Byrd's South Polar naval operation of 1947.
