Film glossary definition for:
Blacklist
HUAC (House Un-American Activities Committee) compiled a roster of artists who were not to be hired during the years 1947-1951. Their intent was to disclose people considered to be Communist sympathizers or government subversives. Hollywood developed a list of such persons who were either known to be or even suspected of being in association with these elements. Studios still deny existence of such a list but many individuals were not able to find work and had to assume aliases to be considered for employment by the industry. Some people were effectively kept out of work for twenty years.
