An adventure film set in a historical period where the emphasis is on elaborate costumes and settings and the action frequently revolves around a certain historical event or momentous occasion. While not lavish in its use of costumes, Raiders of the Lost Ark rekindled the spirit of costume adventure and updated it for modern audiences. The idea of the roving archaeologist is nostalgic in and of itself, recalling the dime-novel heroes of the '40s and '50s, a period the film pays homage to in its design and action. There followed several other attempts at setting adventure in a colorful era, like Greystoke, and the continuing saga of Indiana Jones, but none so entertaining.
