Much is left to be desired from this Republic Pictures release of one of the jewels of the romantic comedy genre. Delbert Mann's 1962 light-hearted romp starring Cary Grant and Doris Day relies much on its witty dialogue and the style of its main players -- which is a good thing here considering the meager attention given to the features. This digitally mastered, "matted" widescreen version comes with mono audio, which is arguably adequate for analogue viewing. Unfortunately, the picture retains an inconsistent and often soft, out-of-focus image, giving the usually pristine Doris Day a mussed, "just out of bed" look. The picture flaws also subtract from the superb art direction, for which the film received a 1962 Academy award nomination. The DVD is presented as part of a Cary Grant collection, yet besides the obligatory bio/filmography provided for Grant and other key cast and crew, there are no special features dedicated solely to him. A mini-documentary would have pleased most fans expecting a more in-depth look at the star. The original theatrical trailer is included (in nearly its original quality), as well as scene access to all chapters. Nominated for three Oscars, this is a film that will endure for its charm and humor, due mostly to its sparkling direction, Stanley Shapiro and Nate Monaster's award-winning screenplay, and the talents of Grant, Day, and such supporting comedians as Gig Young and Audrey Meadows. This package definitely could have provided a better showcase for these talents. |
