Show Boat
Description by Marsha Mehran

MGM's pathetic attempts at packaging this musical extravaganza consist primarily of what the back cover claims to be a four-page booklet featuring "Trivia, Production Notes, and a Revealing Look at the Making of the Film." This actually turns out to be a measly two-page deal with exclusive information that could have adequately fit on the back cover -- a good reminder not to always trust packaging claims. As expected, colors are gaudy and showy in this candy-coated spectacle starring Kathryn Grayson and Howard Keel, but what is most disappointing is the lack of quality when it comes to matters such as bleeding and irregular scratches and nicks. The choice of pan-and-scan takes away from appreciating the full-frame activity, which is especially characteristic of musicals. The original theatrical trailer was given even less treatment -- perhaps to emphasize the "original" element, perhaps out of laziness -- and is full of surface defects. The Dolby Digital Sound mix appears warbled, but loud in the songs, and is often indistinguishable when it comes to the dialogue, although one can argue that the latter elements are not of much consequence in such a sterile version of Edna Ferber's book. MGM does not do much to emphasize its better points.
