Well received by critics and audiences, Billy Elliot was one of the sleeper hits of 2000. That said, Universal has seen fit to give it a rather sparse treatment on DVD. The picture is a beautiful 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, lovingly showing off the English locales with depth and clarity. Sound, as well, is impressive. Dolby Digital 5.1 gives the T. Rex-heavy soundtrack a heavy workout. Where the disc falls short is in the extras department. Without deleted scenes or a commentary, the viewer is left with a 22-minute promotional documentary. Some of it is interesting, most notably the parts involving the parallels between star Jamie Bell and his screen character. Aside from the documentary, there is a trailer and a selection of cast and crew bios. The picture and sound are great, but a film as popular (and as good) as Billy Elliot deserves a better DVD treatment. |
